Popescu and R.J. Tuffs] Cristina C. Popescu and Richard. J. Tuffs Accepted 2002 July 19. Received 2002 May 17; firstpage–lastpage 2002 document firstpage abstract We show that the mean percentage of stellar light re-radiated by dust is ∼ 30% for the Virgo Cluster late-spirals measured with ISOPHOT by Tuffs et al. (2002). A strong dependence of this ratio with morphological type was found, ranging from typical values of ∼ 15% for early spirals to up to ∼ 50% for some late spirals. The extreme BCDs can have even higher percentages of their bolometric output re-radiated in the thermal infrared. Luminosity correction factors for the cold dust component are given for general use in converting far-infrared (FIR) luminosities derived from IRAS.

Cold dust in late-type Virgo Cluster galaxies

We have statistically analyzed the spatially integrated far-infrared (FIR) emissions of the complete volumeand luminosity-limited sample of late-type (later than S0) Virgo cluster galaxies measured using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) by Tuffs et al. (2002) in bands centered on 60, 100 & 170μm. 30 out of 38 galaxies detected at all three wavelengths contain a cold dust emission component,...

Mid - IR emission of galaxies in the Virgo cluster and in the Coma supercluster . IV . The nature of the dust heating sources

We study the relationship between the mid-IR (5-18 µm) emission of late-type galaxies and various other star formation tracers in order to investigate the nature of the dust heating sources in this spectral domain. The analysis is carried out using a sample of 123 normal, late-type, nearby galaxies with available data at several frequencies. The mid-IR luminosity (normalized to the H-band lumin...

We present high signal to noise ratio Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph observations of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies. The galaxies were selected from those that define the colour-magnitude relation of the cluster, with the aim of detecting the silicate emission of their dusty, masslosing evolved stars. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The Nature of the Peculiar Virgo Cluster Galaxies Ngc 4064 and Ngc 4424

Using extensive kinematical and morphological data on two Virgo cluster galaxies undergoing strong nuclear star formation, we show that ram pressure stripping and gravitational interactions can act together on galaxies that have recently fallen into clusters. We present a detailed study of the peculiar HI-deficient Virgo cluster spiral galaxies NGC 4064 and NGC 4424, using CO 1-0 interferometry...
